Hello there!
Welcome to the page for Alpha Phi Omegas Fall 2015 rush! My name is Lanie Cohen and Im the
current Rush Chairman for APO. Im a fourth year American Studies major, Landscape Architecture
minor, and this is my fifth semester in APO. I pledged APO in the Fall of 2013 and it has been, without a
doubt, my most meaningful involvement at UVa. Becoming a member of APO shaped my college
experience, giving me a community at UVa and allowing me to step outside of Grounds to help the larger
Charlottesville community. Feel free to click around this website to learn more about APO as an
organization.
APO is the only coed community service fraternity on Grounds and we participate in about 2500 hours
of service a year all around the Charlottesville and central Virginia area. APOs three cardinal
principlesLeadership, Friendship, and Servicedefine both our activities and our actions. Since joining
APO, Ive had access to various leadership positions, engaged in diverse service project opportunities,
and have made some of my best friends since coming to UVa.

Our rush will begin on October 31st and will conclude on November 11th. Over the two week period of
rush, youll have the opportunity to participate in various service events, from sandwich making to
trailblazing, and to meet brothers that are already excited to meet you. Unfortunately, because of our
commitment to having a tightknit community and our efforts to maintain the quality of service we do, we
cannot accept everyone. We have a selective rush process, which means you must receive a bid to pledge
the following semester. Still, our rush process provides all participants with about 10 hours of meaningful
community service and will help you get a feel for what it would be like to pledge APO.
If you have any questions about rush, please feel free to email me at apo.rushchair@gmail.com. The
brotherhood and I are ready for a great rush processwe hope you are, too.
In Leadership, Friendship, and Service,
Lanie Cohen

- 1 Midweek (1-2 hrs)
- 2 Serve and Mingle Events (1-1.5 hrs)

Service Projects: APO holds service projects every Saturday morning at 8:30 am. We meet in Bice
Parking Lot and split into different groups to do various service events including trailblazing, working
with kids, environmental conservation, and more. We generally end at noon, and sometimes go to lunch
afterwards! If you can't make it Saturday morning, please let me know beforehand and I will let you sign
up for an Alt Project, which is similar to a Saturday Project, just held at a different time.

Thetadate: A Thetadate is an hour long hangout with you, another rushee, and two brothers. In the past, these have included trips to Para Coffee, walks by the river, and finger painting on the Lawn. It's a great way to get to know someone on a more personal level. During rush you will signup for a Thetadate on the Thetadate Collab site, "ThetaDates".
|

Midweeks: Midweeks are smaller scale service events that range from 1 hour to 2.5 hours and happen almost every day of the week. You'll be able to sign up for whatever one interests you most, whether it's playing bingo at a nursing home, gardening with kids, or sorting recycling. Midweek sign-ups are available on a Midweeks Sign-up Google Doc/Spreadsheet that you'll get access to once you fill out a Rushee Info Sheet. Please only sign up for (1) Midweek. If you have midweeks-related questions, contact the midweeks coordinator at apo.midweeks@gmail.com.

Serve and Mingle Events: New to this semester’s Rush process are Serve and Mingle Events. These
events are service oriented and only host current APO brothers and rushees, making these great
opportunities to get to know us and for us to get to know you. This semester, the events include making
sandwiches for the Loaves and Fishes food pantry, making fleece blankets for Project Linus, writing
thank-you notes to UVa employees, and assembling sanitary care packages for the homeless. If you are
unable to make two of these Serve and Mingle Events, please let me know and you will be able to sign up
for an Alternate Serve and Mingle Event which will be smaller, but just as fun and meaningful in terms of
service.
